Virginia Mcadams

December 22, 1926 — April 18, 2023

Virginia H. McAdams, age 96, went to be with her Lord on April 18, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS.

Mrs. McAdams was born in Springfield, Missouri, to Effie Mills and Fred A. Hornbeak Sr. on December 22, 1926. After graduating from Central High School in Springfield, she completed training as a registered nurse at Saint Louis City Hospital School of Nursing. She nursed in Veterans Administration hospitals following World War II, and she helped to open a new VA hospital in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where she met and married Joel J. McAdams Sr. on February 16, 1951. They enjoyed 65 years together before Mr. McAdams’ passing in 2016. Active in church activities all her adult life, she was a member of Fairview Baptist Church at the time of her death, where she had taught Sunday School and participated in many church activities.

Surviving her are her children, Diana (Bill) Pruett, Columbus, Mississippi, Rebecca (Joe) Blount, Hernando, Mississippi, and Joel J. (Phyllis) McAdams II of Morristown, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Drew (Taylor) Pruett, Madison, Mississippi, David Blount and Kevin Blount, both of Olive Branch, Mississippi, Milly (Joe) Woods of Pineville, West Virginia, and Susie (Doug) Ramsey of Morristown, Tennessee; and four great-grandchildren, Emmy and Patrick Pruett of Madison, Mississippi, and Benjamin and Annabel Tunnell of Pineville West Virginia. She was preceded in death by infant great-grandsons, Jasper Tunnell and Flint Tunnell.

Known as “Miss Virginia” to so many people, she had a knack for getting to know them and learning what was important to them, maintaining many of those connections over decades. She saw the value of people as individuals, and, in many ways, she helped them to discover the value in themselves.

The memorial service will take place at Wesley United Methodist Church, 511 Airline Road, in Columbus, Mississippi, at 11 am on Saturday, May 6th, with visitation at 10 am. Memorials may be made to Trinity Place Personal Care, 250 Airline Road, Columbus, Mississippi and to the Missions program at Fairview Baptist Church, 127 Airline Road, Columbus, Mississippi. The service will be conducted by Chaplain Betty Wyatt and Reverend Sarah Windham. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Trinity Personal Care.
