Susan L. Smith

September 9, 1933 — December 7, 2019

Susan Lough Grant Smith died peacefully in her home on December 7, 2019. She was 86. She was born on September 9, 1933 in Emmet, AR to Susie Claire Synder Lough and Johnny Gilbert Lough, the seventh of eight children.

Susan retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1999 after almost 20 years of faithful employment.  She was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Columbus and taught Sunday school for many years at the church. She was actively involved in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and the Les Amies Study Club. She was a long-time volunteer at the First Baptist Church Library and with the Baptist Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, working in the gift shop and the Emergency Room.

She is survived by her children Tambra Smith Lamb (David) of Scottsdale, AZ and Jon W. Smith (Kelley) of Memphis, TN, Five (5)grandchildren, Jacob Wendell Lamb (Oklahoma City, OK), Sheridan Susanne Lamb (Orange County, CA), Cadence Elise Lamb (Abingdon, VA), Oliver Reid Smith (Memphis, TN/Univ of Alabama) and Mary Dreyer Smith (Memphis, TN/Univ of Alabama), and her brother Delmer Gilbert (Sonny) Lough (Betty ) of Hope, AR. She was also survived by her canine soulmate, Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband of two (2) months, SSgt Richard Grant, her husband of 54 years, Dr. Oliver Wendell Smith, her brothers Jewel Ellis Lough, John Carroll Lough, Garland Reed Lough, and her sisters, Ruby Lough Gill, Emma Lough Hubbard, and Martina Lough Ross.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church in downtown Columbus on Saturday, December 14th with visitation at noon and a celebration of her life at 1pm. A private burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory, 2nd Avenue North location is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, First Baptist Church, Columbus, the Palmer Home for Children, or the Dr. O. Wendell Smith Business Scholarship c/o Mississippi University for Women.
