Susan Power James “There is only one happiness in life: to love and be loved.” George Sand. After a courageous, hard fought battle with cancer, Susan Power James (71) passed away at home on Friday, March 28, 2025, with her loving family by her side. Born on March 25, 1954, in Greenwood, MS, to Walter Van Power, Sr. and Elizabeth Gardner Power, Susan was a vibrant presence to all who knew her. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Mississippi State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Susan dedicated thirty-four years of her life to loving and educating children. Her career began in Leflore County, MS and came to completion in Caledonia, MS, at Caledonia Middle School. During her time there she was regarded as a beloved teacher, co-worker, and pillar of the community, On May 16,1981, Susan married Nelson James, and together they were blessed with three wonderful daughters and six treasured grandchildren. She was totally dedicated to her family in all aspects of their lives, taking immense joy and pride in all of their sporting and academic accomplishments. Her family, friends, and love for her Savior Jesus Christ were indeed her greatest treasures. Susan was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her daughters: Darrie Price (Brian) of Columbus, MS; Elizabeth Moore (Lance) of Columbus, MS; Laura Sanders (Collin) of Saltillo, MS, Brothers: Van Power (Barby) of Dallas, TX; Frank Power (Penny) of Leland, MS; Sister: Sally Palmore (William “Pete”) of Greenwood, MS; Grandchildren: McCanna, Tripp, and Power Price; Landon and Jack Moore; Elsie James Sanders; and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her son-in-laws: Brian Price, Lance Moore, and Collin Sanders; grandsons: Tripp and Power Price; Landon and Jack Moore. Honorary Pallbearers are her nephews: Walt Power, Jeffrey “Bubba” Blaylock, Scott Blaylock, Chris Blaylock, and Colt Power. The family would like to express a special thank you to Drs. Clay and Amber Borden, Baptist Cancer Center and Otolaryngology Associates. Donations in honor of Susan can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Funeral Services with Pastor Mel Howton officiating will be held Monday, March 31 at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus, MS. Visitation is at 1:00 p.m. and funeral at 2:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery (Carrollton Ave) in Greenwood, MS.
