Sissie Sisson

Mary Keesee Mattox Sisson of Columbus passed away peacefully on May 4, 2019. She and her twin brother, James, were born on June 1, 1937, to the late Elisabeth and James Mattox, who called the twins, Sissie and Bud.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be  Monday, May 6, 2019, from 5:00-7:00 PM at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will also  be 30 minutes prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory, College St. location, is in charge of arrangements.
Sissie graduated from S. D. Lee High School in Columbus and attended Mississippi State College for Women. She married James Daniel ‘Dan’ Sisson on December 27, 1956. Together, they had five fabulous children and six amazing grand- children. In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker extraordinaire, she was employed by the Social Security Administration and served on the Lowndes County Election Commission. She was a volunteer who always strived to help others and did so through the Columbus Junior Auxiliary, the Good Samaritan Clinic and by mentoring young readers in Columbus public schools.
Sissie’s great loves in her life were her family and friends, her church, travel, fashion and tennis. Two of her many talents were sewing and cooking. Those who received her homemade rolls and carrot cakes would consider themselves lucky. Nothing brought Sissie more pleasure than sewing for those she loved. She and Dan traveled the world from Prague to Beijing, always returning to their beloved Columbus with tales of distant cultures and usually a few yards of fabric to sew a fabulous outfit for herself, daughters or granddaughters. Sissie loved tennis and continued to watch it on television daily long after she gave up playing.
Sissie is preceded in death by her parents, James and Elisabeth Mattox; husband, James Daniel Sisson; and twin brother, James Mattox.
She is survived by her five children, Dana Sisson Mosby and husband, Clifford, Renee Sisson Cooney and husband, Walter, James Lewis Sisson, Catherine Sisson and husband, Richard Brunner, and Michelle Sisson Heredia and husband, Kenny. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Noah Brunner, Reade Heredia, Georgia Brunner, Mattox Heredia, Hayes Heredia, and Sean Cooney. She is also survived by her brother, Jon Mattox and his wife, Carolyne.
