MYRRL BEAN

Myrrl Hudson Bean, age 87, of Columbus, MS, died peacefully in her home on May 5, 2019. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 2:30 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jimmy Criddle officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until the service at First United Methodist Church. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory 2nd Ave. location is in charge of arrangements.


Mrs. Bean was born in Calhoun City, MS, on August 30, 1931, to the late Myrrl Lackey Hudson and Grover Cleveland Hudson. The youngest of five children, Myrrl finished high school in 1949 and was a member of the Calhoun City High School State Championship basketball team. She was All-State in basketball her sophomore and senior years and was Mississippi’s Most Valuable Player her senior year. Following high school, Mrs. Bean attended the University of Southern Mississippi on a music scholarship and completed her degree in Music Education in three years. She taught elementary school music in Flora, MS, and at the Demonstration School in Columbus. Mrs. Bean was an original partner in the 1982 opening of Harveys Restaurant in Starkville, MS. The corporation she co-founded grew to include multiple restaurants in north Mississippi including Harveys, Sweet Pepper’s Deli, The Grill, and Bulldog Burger. She was an avid Mississippi State Bulldog fan and loved to read, play bridge, engage in political debate, and listen to all forms of music. She was a devoted mother, wife, and friend. As the family matriarch, she managed the delicate balance of family and business. She loved the people she worked with and the public she engaged.


Mrs. Bean is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John Thompson Bean, Jr., her brothers, Grover Cleveland “GC” Hudson and Ullin Lee Hudson and her sister Rocehlle Hudson Hawkins. She is survived by her brother Roger Wallace Hudson of Jackson, MS; her children,
John Thompson Bean, III and his wife Kathi and Mark Hudson Bean and his wife Suzanne of Columbus, Susan Blair Bean Hughes and her husband Hamp and Berndard Wilkins Bean and his wife Cindy of Tupelo, MS; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.


Pallbearers will be grandsons Bryant Bean, John Hampton Hughes, Justin Hughes, Bryson Hughes, Hudson Bean, Christian Bean, and Hayden Bean.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building and Integrity Fund at P.O. BOX 32 Columbus, MS 39701.
