Michael Tipton Cooper, of Columbus, MS passed away at his home on May 14th, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Born on February 14th, 1957, Mike was the youngest son of James and Juanita Cooper.

Mike graduated from Lee Highschool in 1975 and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree, College of Business and Industry form Mississippi State University on December 21st, 1979.

At an early age, Mike showed a great aptitude for music, picking up the guitar and entertaining friends and family with his musical gifts. His talent and dedication to his craft led him to be a prominent musical figure in the Columbus and Starkville community. In his early years, Mike performed with a variety of local and regional talents; a musical journeyman, never seeking the spotlight, but passionate about performing. In his 40’s he and his best friend, Taylor Henry, formed the five-piece band Mad Apple, recording an album that consisted of 12 original songs. He was known to be a rock-solid fixture of the group, always delivering guitar parts with a consistent and steady hand.

Mike was a long-time and dedicated volunteer and supporter of Market Street Festival, and many other downtown Columbus events. He served as the Music Committee Chairman for a number of years, assisting with scouting musical acts, sound engineering, as well as performing himself, since the festival’s inception.

Mike was not only a gifted musician, but a kind and generous soul. He thoroughly enjoyed donating his musical talents, playing guitar in worship at United Faith, God in Christ Church. His music resonated with people of all walks of life.

In addition to his passion for music, Mike will be remembered for his infectious personality, quick wit, and generous spirit. As a paralegal, in the latter part of his career, he helped numerous people find resolution in their cause.

Mike was also an avid beach enthusiast and loved snorkeling, weather permitting. He often joked that he brought the rain with him every time traveled to the gulf for vacation, but he was the sunshine for so many.

Mike loved his children, Christen and Breck, and would always support and encourage in their personal passions; Christen in dance and Breck in his musical pursuits. He always referred to Christen as his “Baby Girl,” and “Rock on, Son. Love, Dad!” was a common entry onto Breck’s Facebook page.

Mike reconnected with Terrell in 2022, his childhood sweetheart from 1969. They have been married for the past two years, and she has demonstrated her unwavering commitment to their love, caring for his every need.

“It will feel better when it quits hurting” Mike would often say. While he will be sorely missed by all, we find solace in knowing that his is at peace and with the Lord.

Mike is survived by his wife, Kate Terrell Stone Cooper, his son, James Breckenridge Cooper (Katie), his daughter, Christen Cooper, and his sister, Janice Cooper Beard.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Juanita Cooper, and his brother, Bo Cooper.

A memorial service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held Saturday May 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held Saturday one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
