Matthew Dale Johnson

Matthew Dale Johnson, 32, of Columbus, MS passed away on June 15th, 2023.

Matthew was born on April 8th 1991 in Columbus, MS. He graduated from New Hope High School in 2009 and attended MUW.

He is survived by his parents Louis Johnson and Stephanie (Mike) Johnson and his wife Sunny and their three children, Bryson, Sawyer, and Mollie of Columbus, MS, his Granddaddy, Mr. Tommy Johnson of Columbus, MS, Grandmother, Shirley Bruce of Brookhaven, MS, his sisters Elizabeth Selkey (Allen) of Canton, GA and Valerie Boykin (Gabe) of Tupelo, MS, and his brothers Max Branch of Columbus, MS and Bruce Branch (Abby) of Greenwood, MS.

He is also survived by Sunny’s Grandmother Faye Seymer, Mother-in-law JoJo Seymer, sister-in-law Keeley Moore, brother-in-law Trace Moore (Lindsey), Jeff and Margaret Seymer and cousin Chipper Seymer of McShan, AL.

Matthew is predeceased by his Granddaddy E.R. “Yogi” Bruce of Brookhaven, MS, Grandmother Nancy Johnson of Columbus, MS, niece Janie Branch of Holly Springs, MS and Father-in-law Sonny “Big Pop” Seymer of McShan, AL.

Matthew was a loving father, devoted husband and passionate outdoorsman. Matthew and his family never missed hunting season, and he and Sunny loved teaching their kids just as they had been taught from a young age. As a 10U AA Mississippi State Champion baseball coach, Matthew thrived on watching Bryson and the Dirty South Baseball Team play. His joy and enthusiasm for those young boys was visible and contagious.

While hunting and fishing was their passion, Matthew was mesmerized with the beauty of his daughters. He loved watching Sawyer and Mollie grow to be such vibrant and beautiful young girls. He was so fond of watching Sawyer in her beauty reviews and cheering for her and Mollie in their sports games. His girls were becoming  exceptional soccer, softball and tee-ball players and he couldn’t stop smiling while watching them. Additionally, Matthew was an enormous Mississippi State Bulldog fan and has been wearing Maroon and White since the day he was born.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023 at 2:00PM. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home: 716 2nd Ave North Columbus, MS 39701.

Graveside service will follow at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church:11 Union Hill Road Reform, AL 35481
