Matt Hearn

May 14, 1956 — March 4, 2022

JOHN MATTHEW HEARN

John Matthew "Matt" Hearn, 65, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022 at his residence.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory.  Burial will follow at Furnace Hill Cemetery in Vernon, AL. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Matt was born on May 14, 1956 in Prattville, AL to  Zama Madeline Thomley Hearn and the late John William Hearn.  He recently retired from Thompson’s Welding Services. Matt still claimed the title of iron worker, not a pipe fitter, boiler maker or welder. He definitely wasn’t union. Matt loved telling a good story or joke. A finer Good Time Charlie there was not. He had an affinity for classic cars and motorcycles. By his conservative estimate he had owned at least 50. He loved problem solving and could always be found working on something for himself or a friend. Many conversations with his wife and children began with, “you been checking the oil in that car?” He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, although he often admitted that he was just barely handsome and funny enough for his wife to have kept him all these years. If he liked you, he would do anything for you. If he didn’t like you, he would still do anything for you, he would just complain about it a little afterwards. Matt valiantly fought cancer for almost a decade. He beat it twice but the third time took its toll. It’s of no surprise that Matt is left with a winning record of 2-1.
In addition to his father, Mr. Hearn was preceded in death by his brother, Drew Hearn and granddaughter, Kenley Ruth Culver. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Hearn; son, Lance Hearn (Brittney); daughter, Amber Culver (Lucas); mother, Zama Madeline Thomley Hearn;  sister, Jan Holbrook (Bill); brothers, Alan Hearn (Sherry) and Neal Hearn; and 5 grandchildren, Camden Culver and John William, Jackson, Caroline and James Hearn.
Serving as pallbearers are Larry Burns, Richard Wilson, Greg Hall, Michael Watts, Lucas Culver and Dakota Bradford.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Thompson family and the shop crew at Thompson’s Welding.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
