MARY TYLER

Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Tollison Tyler, age 104, of Columbus, MS, transitioned to heaven on May 20, 2021, to be with her Lord and Savior and rejoin her husband, Robert Wayne Tyler who had preceded her.  A family graveside service will be Friday, May 28, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Friendship Cemetery with Rev. Cliff Lea officiating.  Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory 716 2 nd Ave. North location is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tyler was born March 26, 1917, in Duck Hill, MS, and grew up in Winona, MS, and lived over 70 years in Columbus.  She attended Draughn’s Business College in Memphis, TN, and was a secretary at the Quaker Oats Company for a few years.  While there, she ran into a family friend, Robert Wayne Tyler, who had moved from Winona to Memphis to work with the C&G Railroad.  They courted and married.  Several years later, Mary Elizabeth and Wayne moved to Columbus.  They raised 3 children, Beverly Lea and her husband Tommy, Edith Dowdle and her husband Nutie, and Cliff Tyler and his wife Betty, she is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  They were always members of First Baptist Church.  For over 30 years she delighted in teaching two year old children in Sunday School.  She loved to tell them stories about Jesus, and how much he loved them.

“Miss Lib” showed her love for her grandchildren in creative ways.  She loved to put several children in her wheelbarrow and rapidly race them around her backyard, as they squealed with pleasure.  She would roll them toward her flower garden and allow them each to pick one flower.  (Her specialties were roses, daises, and gladiolas).  Then they would go inside to put the flowers in water and have some of Nanny’s fabulous homemade cookies.  She was secretary at the Columbus Handle Co. for Everett Winters, and a secretary at First Baptist Church for several years.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 829, Columbus, MS, 39703 .
