Ellen Malcolm

January 20, 1934 — November 28, 2021

MADELINE MALCOLM

Madeline Ellen (Chappell) Malcolm, 87, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2021 at her home in Columbus following a long battle with cancer. Her daughter was by her side.

Ellen, as she was known to all who loved her, was born January 20, 1934 to Thomas Alvin Chappell and Madeline Helen (McNally) Chappell of Barton, MD. She married the love of her life, Leonard Erwin Malcolm, on June 30, 1952 and stood proudly by his side as he served the United States Air Force for over 20 years.

Embracing the military life, they moved all over the country. While stationed in Columbus during the 1960’s, she worked as a waitress at the Holiday Inn. The 1970’s took them to West Virginia and Michigan. She could always be found smiling during her shifts at K-Mart where she worked once they settled in Columbus, MS following Erv’s retirement from the military. They were married nearly 50 years before he preceded her in death in 2002.

She was also preceded in death by siblings Tommy, Ike, Mary Jo, Dwight and Paul, grandson Ian Malcolm, as well as daughter in law Vicki (Lahman) Malcolm. She is survived by sons Lenny (Kathy) Malcolm Jr. and Dennis (Vanessa) Malcolm; daughter Barbara (Richard) Burkhardt; grandchildren Lenny (Andrea) Malcolm, Leslie (Kenny) Keene, Courtney (Drew) Foster, Brooke (Keith) Dykes, Kelly Malcolm, Hawes (Jessie) Burkhardt and Amanda (Joseph) Payne; multiple great grandchildren; siblings Mike (Cheryl) Chappell and Pat (Leo Olwill) Chappelle and several nieces, nephews and their families.

She was a light to all who knew her and could be found cooking enormous meals for family gatherings and dancing the evenings away to her favorite country songs at her beloved Junction. If there weren’t intense games going on around her table, she could be found allowing her granddaughters to do makeovers there with varying degrees of success. The concept of “too much dessert” did not exist within the confines of her dining room, as she enjoyed getting the latest “dish” from family members over multiple cups of coffee.

She was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and never shied away from telling it like it was. She dedicated her time to serving others and enjoyed many years as a parishioner at Annunciation Catholic Church. Her life will be celebrated there at a Mass of Resurrection on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the church.
