Judy Kay Evans Smith

August 28, 1952 – October 7, 2020

Judy Kay Evans Smith, 68, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her family.

A visitation will be Sunday, October 11, 2020 from 2:00 – 3:00 PM at 7 th Street Columbus Church of Christ; a going home celebration will follow at 3:00 PM. With Minister Billy Ferguson officiating and Paul Bennett assisting, interment will be at Friendship Cemetery Columbus, MS.  Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory, 903 College Street Location is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was born August 28, 1952 in Montgomery, MS to the late Charles Earl and Helen Pauline Evans. She was an active member of 7 th Street Church of Christ where she was the director of the Columbus Christian School from 2009 – 2015.

Judy’s hobbies included being an avid antique collector, camping and traveling. She graduated from Ocean Springs High School in Ocean Springs, MS. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary education from Mississippi University for Women.

Mrs. Smith taught many children at Caledonia School whom she loved dearly from 1975 – 2002. She taught the Monroe County Mennonite School for 3 years and tutored numerous students after retirement.

Mrs. Judy is survived by her husband of 29 years – Mike Smith of Columbus MS; sons – Stephen (Tracy) Weathers, Mark (Tasha) Smith, Jonathan Smith; daughter – Emily Weathers Hankins; grandkids – Garrett Weathers, Emma Weathers, John Dylan Hankins, Andrew (Amber) Hankins; brothers – Charles Earl Evans Jr. (Sara), Terry Evans (Luvena), Jerry Evans (Tom); a host of nieces and nephews and her dog companion – Cesar.

Preceded in death by her father, Charles Earl Evans Sr; her mother, Helen Pauline Evans; maternal grandparents, Robert and Linnie Fisher; paternal grandparents, Clyde and Lois Evans; and son-in-law, John Allen Hankins.

The family would like to give special appreciation to caregivers, Elois Brown, Linda Harris and Legacy Hospice.

Serving as pallbearers will be Terry Evans, Jerry Evans, Charles Evans, Garrett Weathers, Andrew Hankins, and John Dylan Hankins. Honorary Pallbearers are Bob Stafford, Roy Miller, Adam Hickman, Don and Edna Cole, Steve Whitten, Cameron Allsup, and the Elders and Deacons of the Columbus Church of Christ.
