Johnny Maxwell McCrary, Sr.

Johnny Mack McCrary age 87 died Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbus, MS.

Born April 6, 1934, to the late Maxwell B. and Gracie Lee Dodson McCrary, Jr.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gail Delores Junkin McCrary, two children, Johnny Maxwell (Kathy) McCrary, Jr of Petal and Ginger (Chip) Smith of Columbus.  Three grandchildren William L. McCrary, and John M. McCrary, III of Melbourne, Florida, Freda Kirkland of Petal and two great grandchildren.

He graduated from S.D. Lee High School in 1952, honorably discharged in 1956 from the U.S. Airforce, attended Mississippi State University, owned a Restaurant, Service Station and McCrary Real Estate, served on the Board of Directors and President of East Lowndes Water Association, and served 30 years as U.S. Rural Mail Carrier.  After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, he served as President of the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors.  His proudest moment as president of the board of Supervisors was the signing of the lease with Baptist Health Care systems for the Local Hospital on March 19, 1993.  Johnny Mack served on the following board of directors and executive boards of CLEDA and Golden Triangle Planning and Development District and served as the 2 nd Vice President of the Tennessee Valley Association of County Governments.  He was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served on several committees and as an assistant Sunday School teacher.   The family would like to thank Baptist Hospital and all the employees for the care given to him and our community.   In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church building fund, 1383 Pleasant Hill Road, Columbus, MS 39702, or St. Jude’s Hospital.

Visitation on Tuesday, December 14 th from 4pm-6pm at Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home and Crematory 903 College Street.
