JOHN L. ROMINGER
John L. Rominger age 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Bethany Hospice House in Auburn, AL. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Community Cemetery in Ethelsville, AL.
John was born on August 24th, 1930 in Aliceville, AL to the late Ernest C. and Emma Lovelady Rominger. He graduated from S. D. Lee High School in Columbus, MS in 1951. His senior quote was “Who broke no promise, served no private end, who gained no title, and lost no friend.” He had tried to drop out of school in the sixth grade, but his father said he could either go to school or pay rent. He chose to go to school and was always happy for that choice. In 1952, after attending East Mississippi Jr. College in Scuba, MS he and some friends heard about work to be had in Iowa and took a trip to check it out. He was hired at ALCOA Aluminum and worked there for the next 40 years. There he worked his way up to Product Accounting Supervisor at Davenport Works. While working he attended college at Marycrest College in Davenport and took some classes at Augustana College in Rock Island. Upon his retirement, he was noted for his tremendous and generous contributions to Davenport Works and ALCOA. John was called a promoter and leader of change for improvement. He trained many employees over the years; product accounts, clerks, supervisors, and managers. He was known for his analytic skills and his willingness and ability to teach those who worked with him. He was especially proud to have gone from his first job of picking cotton as a child all the way up to a supervisor at ALCOA. In Iowa, he met and married Dorothy (Dottie) Potter on February 8th, 1958. They raised two children together and divorced after 32 years. After divorce and retirement, John moved back to Columbus, MS, and later to Ethelsville, AL where he was “adopted” by the Griffin Family. He joined and attended Forest United Methodist Church. Mr. John lived there happily for many years working in his wood shop and helping neighbors with various woodworking projects. In 2011 he moved to Auburn, AL to live next door to Daisy (Chris) Griffin (and family) whom he had “adopted” as a granddaughter. He spent his time watching Daisy’s children grow up, smoking cigars and waving at folks who passed the corner of Brookwood Dr. and Thach Ave. He had a fierce Marbles rivalry with Charlie Rose Griffin; she usually won! In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Charles, Bill, and Richard and his sisters Betty, Patty, and Teeny. He is survived by his son Jack (Patty) Rominger, Temecula, CA, and daughter Rhonda Rominger (Robert Fisher),Bettendorf, IA; grandsons Doug (Courtney) Rominger, Nashville, TN, Curtis (Ashley) Rominger, Lake Forest, CA, and granddaughter Emma Woods, Bettendorf, IA; Dottie Rominger, mother of his children, Bettendorf, IA; the Griffin family of Ethelsville, AL, and especially Daisy and Chris Griffin and children, Laura, Alex and Charlie Rose of Auburn, AL
Memorials can be made to Forest United Methodist Church or Forest Community Cemetery (where he’s had his plot waiting for him for 28 years), 111 County Rd 89, Ethelsville, AL 35461.
