Jimmy Ray Wood age 74, died Sunday, January 12, 2020 at his residence in Columbus. Services will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the 903 College Street Chapel of Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Sanderson officiating. Burial will follow at Egger Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Mr. Wood was born on Monday, July 30, 1945 in Memphis, TN to the late Robert Dee and Katie Mae Barrett Wood.
Mr. Wood was previously employed by Waters Truck & Tractor, and was the former owner and operator of Woods Chevron, and the current owner/operator of Malone’s Grocery Store. In his early years he enjoyed racing with Fairchild Racing Team, and serving as an auxiliary deputy with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s office. He was a hard worker all of his life and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his late grandson, Sloan Ian Atkins. He loved to camp, fish, and dove hunt, and was and was an avid stockcar racing fan. Mr. Wood was a loving husband, a patient father, a generous business man, a great provider, and a loyal friend. In addition to his parents and his grandson he was preceded in death by is sister, Kathy Price.
