Janie Mae Johnson
Janie Mae McCulley Johnson
February 2, 1932 – December 23, 2023
Janie was born in a cabin in Carrollton, Alabama, to a pair of farmers, Mr & Mrs B.C. McCulley. As an only child, she had to work especially hard on the farm, and she moved with her family to Columbus, Mississippi, when quite young. The first in her family to graduate high school, she also received a degree from Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi University for Women.) While in college, she met and married her husband of 70 years, David Lemuel Johnson of Bassett, Arkansas. They moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she worked for the US Government in the medical field. After the birth of their son, Michael, they moved to Newark, New Jersey, where their first daughter, Carol, was born. Their second daughter, Lisa, was born after they moved near Princeton, where Janie worked for the New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatric Institute in the field of research.
In 1968, the family moved to Snellville, Georgia, where she worked as a lab technician for Doctors Hospital in Tucker. She worked there for many years, during which time she saw her three children graduate college. After retiring, she studied and received her real estate license—something she was very proud of—and later she and David built a house on Lake Sinclair near Sparta; followed by another house on Lake Hartwell; and finally, they moved to Augusta, to be closer to their eldest daughter and her husband.
Janie loved the rural life. She enjoyed walking out in nature to enjoy birds and other wildlife and helping her husband in the vegetable and flower gardens. (She even became a Master Gardener through the Atlanta Botanical Gardens Program.) A lover of water, she enjoyed spending time at their condo at Daytona Beach Shores, and another in Helen, Georgia, as well as at their lake homes. A lifelong volunteer, she dedicated herself to helping out at the local library, hospital and church wherever she lived and until just a few years ago. As a loving mother and wife, she supported her family in every way. She will be much missed by all who enjoyed her cheerful spirit.
She is predeceased by her husband, David Lemuel Johnson; and is survived by her son Michael Chesley Johnson (Trina Stephenson); her daughters, Carol Johnson Reimche (Donavon) and Lisa Johnson Boyd (David); as well as grandchildren Cady Jones (Brandon), Jack Clark (Alexis), Andrew Reimche, Sarah Reimche and great-grandson Bowen Jones.
The family deeply appreciates the loving care provided over the years by the wonderful staff at Thrive of Augusta, the Just Like Family home caregivers, Savannah River ProHome Care caregivers, and Regency Hospice.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday December 29, 2023, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery
