James Lawrence Moore

James Lawrence Moore of Ethelsville, Alabama, age 93, passed away at his home on August 14, 2024. Mr. Moore was born in Ethelsville, Alabama on October 15, 1930 to the late Magnolia Williams Moore and the late John Bestor Moore. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by brothers, John Moore and Bestor Moore and sisters, Agnes Riley, Elizabeth Klein and Dixie Lawson. He was a graduate of Liberty High School in Ethelsville and attended Mississippi State University. He married his high school sweetheart, Jo Alyce Bell on Christmas Day in 1950. Lawrence served his country in the United States Army for 2 years and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. Lawrence retired from Eka Nobel in 1993 after 38 years, allowing him to pursue his hobbies of beekeeping, tending his peach orchard, wood working and genealogy with added enthusiasm. He was an active member of Forest United Methodist Church serving as a Trustee, chairman of the Staff Parish committee and various other activities. A member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Patrick Boggan Chapter in Meridian, Mississippi and the Hill House Chapter in Columbus Mississippi. He was also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Lawrence was a member of the Pickens County Farmers Federation, serving on the board of directors for several years. He was recently named an honorary member when his declining health prevented his attendance at meetings. Lawrence was instrumental in organizing the Forest Community Volunteer Fire Department and was a firefighter for 20 years. He is survived by Jo Alyce Bell Moore, his loving wife of 73 years, and three children, Teresa Winter (Alan), Tina Rakestraw (Tyre) and Tim Moore (Vanessa), granddaughters Melanie Winter, Brigitte Sosebee (Greg), Christy McBride (Kip), Amy Helms, Tyra Kelly (Bill), Tara Meeks (Daniel), grandsons Chris Winter and Adam Moore (Klaire). Several great-grandchildren. Visitation is at Memorial Funeral Home on 2nd Street in Columbus from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 15th. Funeral services will be held at Forest United Methodist Church, Ethelsville, Alabama with military honors on Friday at 11:00 AM on August 16, 2024.
