James Edward Mcnees

James E. “Joe” McNees, 95 passed away on November 29, 2020 in Birmingham, AL

Mr. McNees was born on September 26, 1925 to Joe Hill McNees, Sr. and Ila Mae McNees.  He lived the majority of his life in Columbus, MS.  He and his wife moved to Birmingham, AL in 2005 to be near their children and grandchildren.  He was a graduate of S.D. Lee High School in Columbus, MS and served in the US Navy.  He attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers; Joe Hill McNees, Jr. and Thomas Lavert McNees: his sister, Kathleen McNees Wilson; and a daughter, Diane Materna Lee.  Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Gee McNees; one daughter Jamie McNees Gleason (Jeff); grandchildren, Kaitlyn Gleason and Austin Gleason and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  The family would like to offer special thanks to caregivers: Cecilia, Cindy, Donna, Gwen and Teresa.

Mr. McNees loved spending time with his grandchildren.  His favorite past times were playing pool (which he usually won), cards, dominoes, checkers and fishing.

Memorial Gunter and Peel Funeral Home, 903 College Street Columbus, MS is in charge of arrangements.  A graveside visitation and service will be held at Friendship Cemetery, 4 th Street South, Columbus, MS at 2:00 on December 1, 2020.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Gleason, Austin Gleason, Mike Gee, Seth Gee, Waymon Earl Tilley, Samuel E. Wilcox.  Honorary pallbearers will be: Charles M. Swoope, Martin Stap, Tommy DeMedicis, Billy M. Swedenburg, Sam Chabani and Jeff Codding.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association PO Box 840692 Dallas, TX 75284-0692 ( www.heart.org ).
