Imogene Mccallum Hutchison

January 31, 1926 — July 6, 2024

Imogene LeNell McCallum Hutchison, 98, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024, in Columbus, Mississippi, surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her children: Fountain Mosby Hutchison III of Quincy, Florida and Costa Rica, Kathryn (Kathy) Hutchison Elliot of Scottsdale, AZ, Hugh Edward Hutchison (Sandra Kerstetter Hutchison) of Smyrna, GA, and Elizabeth Anne (Liz) Hutchison of Columbus, MS. Ms. Genie is also survived and adored by her 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Ms. Genie was born in Smith County, Mississippi, on the family farm on January 31,1926, to Duncan Edward McCallum and Eugenia Abigail (McNair) McCallum. She graduated from Mize High School as Valedictorian and attended Hines Junior College, studying stenographer skills, where she sang in the choir and was voted Most Beautiful. While living and working in Jackson, MS, she met and subsequently married Fountain Mosby Hutchison, Jr. a native of Crystal Springs, MS, on December 19, 1946.

With Fountain, a career Air Force Officer, she moved her family to multiple assignments across the country as a supportive military spouse. When her husband, now Lt. Col., retired from the Air Force in 1968 the family settled in Columbus, MS where Fountain taught Air Force Jr ROTC at S.D. Lee High School for 18 years. Everyone always felt her immense love for her husband, family, and friends. She was always there to dry a tear, offer encouraging words, give a hug, and feed you home cooked food. Her children were her Life’s Work and Ms. Genie was dedicated to their safe whereabouts, their well-being and their happiness. For that, we, her children, are enormously lucky and so very grateful. She offered everyone a gentle hug and a sweet smile that could always move mountains and soothe the soul.

Throughout her life Ms. Genie was a loyal and gracious supporter of the Presbyterian Church USA and she was a 55-year member of First Presbyterian Church USA in Columbus, MS. There she found so many treasured friends who became like family to her. Everyone basked in the light of her love for others and willingness to help. Outside of family, friends, and church activities, her passions were dedicated to being of service to others and taking care of all of God’s creatures. With the Lutheran Braille Workers, Ms. Genie printed out Books of the Bible in Braille to send around the world for over 30 years. She was a 40-year loyal member of MOAA, Military Officers’ Association of America, where she met cherished friends. Ms. Genie created Hospice Floral Arrangements with friends for decades to brighten the day of Hospice Patients. She was a 50-year Lifetime Member of Galaxy Garden Club, at times serving as Chaplain.

The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church USA, 3200 Bluecutt Rd., Columbus, MS, 39705, on Tuesday, July 9, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be prior to the service at 1 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Memorial contributions may be directed in her memory to First Presbyterian Church P.O Box 9681, Columbus, MS 39705.

A life well lived, so very loved, and precious to so many. That is the gift with which she leaves us. Ms. Genie will be dearly missed.
