HERMAN HUGHES Herman Hughes, Sr, age 84, of Steens, MS, passed away July 1, 2022, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at 3:00 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Chapel. The interment will immediately follow at Egger Cemetery in Caledonia, MS. Visitation will be from 1:30 PMuntil the time of the service. Mr. Hughes was born January 11, 1938, in Hazard, KY, to the late Richard and Marie Napier Hughes. He was retired from the United States Air Force and a veteran of Vietnam. Mr. Hughes owned and operated Hughes Holiday Gulf & U-Haul for many years. He was a member of First Assembly of God and the Caledonia Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hughes was also a member of the Friendly City Campers. He enjoyed many interests throughout his life, including camping, Nascar, and flying. Mr. Hughes had a heart for God and showed his love for Christ in both his words and actions. He was devoted to and adored by his family, and he taught them how to live with faith, strength, courage, and love. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Hughes, great grandson, Elliot Hughes, and brothers, Lawrence Hughes and Lee Hughes. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Rose Marie "Patsy" Hughes of Steens, MS; son, Herman "Buddy" Hughes, Jr. and his wife Jan of Trussville, AL; daughters, Susanne Smith and her husband Dennis of Fayette, AL, and Jennifer Scott and her husband Dave of Jackson, MS; brother, Donald Hughes and his wife Doris of Corinne, WV; sisters, Ruth Ann Youngblood and her husband Don of Pottsboro, TX, and Betty Jean Willey and her husband Bob of Beckley, WV; grandchildren, Josh Hughes of Wichita, KS, John Hughes and his wife Rachel of Leeds, AL, and Joe Hughes and his wife Sandy of Florence, KY; and 15 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Josh Hughes, John Hughes, Joe Hughes, Dave Scott, Caleb Hughes, and Dennis Smith. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Robert Jones, Dr. William Rosenblatt, Dr Jiahuai Tan, the oncology staff at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, and the staff at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.
