HENRY WEISS
Henry Stephen Weiss was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on November 8 th , 1930 to the late Joe and Cissy Weiss. He graduated from Clarksdale High S chool. He was an MP in the United States Army (1953-1955) where he was stationed in Brooklyn, New York. He married Jody McKnight on June 30 th , 1954. Henry owned and managed Columbus Scrap Material Company from 1956 until 1996. Henry was very involved in Columbus and the state of Mississippi. He was on the Board of Directors and Executive Board of Columbus & Greenville Railway Company. He was the first Board President of the Lowndes County Port Authority and played an influential role in the establishment of the port in Columbus.
Henry served on the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for 14 years; three years as Vice Chairman and three years as Chairman. Henry served on the Board of Directors and Executive Board of National Bank of Commerce of Mississippi.
He was a partner with the Billy Coleman family in Dixie Auto Parts and a partner with KB and Rusty House in Industrial Fabricators. He also partnered with Bud Phillips in P & W Enterprise.
Henry was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , where he served on the vestry. Henry was an avid fisherman and bird hunter. He was an original member of the Men’s Breakfast Club for many years.
The friendship and love shared between Jimmy Graham and Henry was one of the greatest joys of his life. They were together six days a week for twenty plus years.
Henry is survived by three daughters, Wendy Weiss, Risa Mansfield (Ken), and Welissa Rader (Gregg), as well as Nelda Umfress who he loved like a daughter. He also leaves behind four adored grandchildren: Jody Pace (Dustin), Blakeney Black (Jake), Bryce Rader (Kelsea), and Bailey Quirk (Neal). He leaves behind nine great-grandchildren. Henry was loved and cared for by four caregivers, Pat Congress, Sylvester Lathum, Asheley Topps, and Brenetta Sherrod.
Memorial / Gunter Peel Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. There will be a graveside service at Friendship Cemetery on Thursday, March 11 th , 2021 at 11:00 am conducted by Rev. Sandra DePriest.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Graham, Al Puckett, Bud Phillips, Bobby Harper, Rex Swedenburg, Tommy Johnson, Mickey Brislin, Don Calloway, Gregg Rader, Ken Mansfield, Rusty House, and Greg Puckett.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Berry, Charles Russell Berry, Reau Berry, Duke Berry, Billy Lancaster, Robert White, Chance Laws, Dr. Jack Reed, Dr. Brett Brown, John Barron, Jake Black, Bryce Rader, Neal Quirk, and the employees of Columbus Recycling.
