Harry Dowdle, Jr., 90, passed away February 13, 2023, at his residence.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February15, 2023, from 1-2:30 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home. Internment will follow at Friendship Cemetery at 3 PM.

Harry Dowdle, Jr. was born January 31, 1933, in Vernon, AL, to the late Harry Dowdle, Sr. and Bessie Finch Dowdle. He also had one brother, the late Lee Dowdle (Virginia). Harry lived a long life full of adventure, joy and love. He began his journey with a four-year tour with the Air Force as a communication specialist and a courier for classified information. After completion of duty, Harry joined the Columbus Police Dept. with 24 years of service. He attended the FBI Academy in 1968. After graduation, Harry became commander of the Columbus/Lowndes Narcotic Division until his retirement in 1990. After retiring he enjoyed golfing and spending time with family and friends.

Harry is survived by his wife, Betty Pennington Dowdle of 47 years of marriage. Other family includes his beloved daughter, Harriet Dowdle Berry (Dr. Michael Berry) of Columbus, MS; his three sons, Terry Dowdle (Barbara) of Birmingham, AL, Mike Dowdle of Jacksonville, FL, and Todd Dowdle of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Blayze Berry, Swayze Berry, Josh Dowdle, Maggie Dowdle, Amy Garner, Allegra Liddell, Skylar Dowdle and Buckley Dowdle. He is also survived by a growing number of numerous great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his beloved dogs, Coby and Brody.

Pallbearers will be Blayze Berry, Al Rudd, Artie Pennington, Skylar Dowdle, Bobby Dan Marshall and Josh Dowdle, Buckley Dowdle and Leatus Still.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Berry, Adam and Robin Bates, Bobby and Kay Marshall, “The Coffee Club”, Dan and Leisa Cunningham, Kristin Williamson, George Seabrooks, Robert White, Dr. Amber Borden and staff, Amanda Mordecai, N.P., Gentiva Hospice, Encore Physical Therapy, Haley Barker, Pete Bowmen, JoAnne and Gina Hill, Danielle Foster, Luke Johnson, Lea Ellen Bobo.
