GEORGE YOUNG STEEL

George Young Steel, 89, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Trinity Personal Care in Columbus, MS. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 11:00 am at Memorial Gardens in Columbus.

Mr. Steel was born on February 21, 1931 in Paris, Texas to the late George Dalton Steel and Katie Lee Young.  He was a graduate of Paris High School.  He received a Bachelor of Science from East Texas State University in Commerce, TX, a Bachelor of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX, and a Master's of Education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ.  He Pastored Southern Baptist Churches in Texas from 1953-1970 and then relocated to Arizona where he lived from 1970-1978. After moving to Mississippi in 1978, he taught Lowndes County and Columbus Public Schools and served as interim pastor of Baptist Churches in Clay and Lowndes counties.  He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Barnett Steel; his sister, Tommie Lee Lopp; and brother, Jim C. Steel.  He is survived by his sons, Carey Day Steel (Jill) of Nashville, TN and Jason Riley Steel (Kim) of Columbus, MS; and grandchildren, Isabella Steel-Jeninga, Gabrielle Steel, and Haley Steel.
