Eugene Wilson Davenport

Eugene Wilson "Gene" Davenport, age 89, of Columbus, MS, passed away March 22, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Gene was born September 24, 1934, in Aberdeen, MS, to the late Ezra and Rena Seago Davenport. He was retired from the United States Air Force after 22 years and was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. Gene married Elaine K. Davenport on September 20, 1955, and they lived in many places during his military service, overseas and stateside. He worked as an air traffic controller in the Air Force and after retirement, he worked for over 20 years for Lowndes County and the City of Columbus. Gene loved Ole Miss and was a devoted fan of the Rebels. He was very involved with the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society, loved golf, and played many years at the Green Oaks Golf Course. Survivors include his wife of sixty eight and a half years, Elaine, and three daughters, Catherine Davenport of Columbus, MS, Diane Wall and her husband Frank of Columbus, MS, and Lynn Harrison and her husband Ron of Cleveland, TN. four grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren, special friends, and extra helpful nurses at Windsor Place.
