Frances Bennet Johnson, 87, beloved mother and friend, passed away February 5, 2024, at Trinity Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be at 1:30pm Friday, at Christ Covenant Church, with Rev. Dr. Jonathan Speegle officiating.
Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00-1:30pm prior to services at the church.
Frances was born August 24, 1936, in Leaksville, North Carolina, to Bennet and Mattie Ruth Dillon Nooe. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1958 and married the next year. In 1963 she moved with her young family to Columbus.
After earning her M.A. from MSCW (MUW), Frances worked as a social worker at the Lowndes County Department of Human Services, and served as its director for several years before retiring.
In retirement she continued her love of helping and supporting people by working in Missions at Central United Methodist Church, and later
Covenant United Methodist Church. She also served on the boards of several charitable organizations in Lowndes County.
In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Ernest Lane Johnson; brother, Charles Nooe, and half-sister, Mary Carter Nooe Hackney.
Survivors include her daughter, Sally (Bob) Mangum of Columbus, MS; son, Bennet (Sheila) Johnson of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, Rachel
Mangum of Columbus, MS, Violet Johnson of Denver, CO, Sarah Mangum of Lubbock, TX, and Chris Johnson of Fort Worth, TX; sister-in-law Jean Barr of Knoxville, TN, and several cherished nieces and nephews.
