Dr. Paul Wayne Kantack

Dr. Paul Wayne Kantack, M.D., FAPM, FAPA, age 78, died peacefully at his home in Columbus, Mississippi on May 2, 2019. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of forty-eight (48) years, Catherine Margaret Driscoll Kantack, and his daughter, Kelly Ann Kantack. He is survived by his son, Keith C. Kantack (wife, Dr. Jerri Lamar Kantack), and his granddaughter, Emma Driscoll Kantack. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Gene Kantack of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and many nieces and nephews in Oregon and Washington.

Dr. Paul Kantack was born in Clyde, Kansas on July 11, 1940 to George Vincent and Josephine Leena Kantack. He grew up in Boise, Idaho, graduating from St. Teresa’s Academy High School in 1958. He received degrees from Boise State (A.A.), College of Idaho (B.S.), and Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska (M.D. – 1965). He completed a rotating Internship at The University of Iowa (1965 – 1966) and his Residency/Fellowship in Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (1969 – 1972). Subsequently, Dr. Kantack was the Chair of the Department of Mental Health at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi until 1984. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1984 as a Full Permanent Colonel (Legion of Merit). He flew with the Strategic Air Command of the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon. After retiring from the Air Force, Dr. Kantack entered private practice in New Orleans, Louisiana, and eventually retired in Columbus, Mississippi. He is well published regarding Military Psychiatry, Mood Disorders, and the Diagnosis and Treatment of Alcoholism.

Paul Kantack loved and cherished life, his family, and his friends, and he was deeply rooted in faith and service to God.

The Catholic “Mass of the Resurrection” will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus, Mississippi on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m with Father Jeffery Waldrep officiating . Visitation will be held at the Church starting at 9:30 a.m. Graveside services with U.S. Air Force Honors will be held at the Corinth National Cemetery in Corinth, Mississippi. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory 2 nd Ave N. is in charge of arrangements.
