On December 3, 2023, Doug Phillips passed away peacefully at home after a courageous 19 month battle with Glioblastoma. He was 55 years old.
John Douglass Phillips was born in Columbus, MS, on June 8, 1968, to Thomas Leyton “Bud” Phillips and Lucille “Lucy” Andries Phillips. Doug attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from S.D. Lee High School in 1986. He loved skateboarding and built a half-pipe on his parents’ tennis court, where he and his friends frequently hosted skating competitions. If you knew Doug, you know he loved the band KISS. He attended numerous concerts and KISS Kruises, and was known to dress up like Gene Simmons at Halloween.
When Doug was 15 years old, he began working for Phillips Contracting pouring concrete in the summers. He attended Mississippi State University and graduated in 1990 with a degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, he continued working full time at Phillips Contracting. In 1993, he began working at Falcon Contracting, where he remained for 30 years. He was active and respected in his church and community.
Doug loved to be on the river and took Rayne on the boat when she was just two weeks old. He fiercely loved Rayne, whom he adored and protected. Doug loved Garrison like a son and teaching him to hunt renewed Doug’s love for hunting. Doug and Renee were married for only five short years, but in that time they loved and lived more than most people do in a lifetime.
He is survived by his wife, Renee; children, Rayne Phillips and Garrison Reedy; his father, Bud (Joy) Phillips; mother, Lucy Phillips; and mother-in-law, Barbara Mullins, all of Columbus, MS. He is also survived by his sister, Lisa (Allen) Kerby, brothers, Leyton Phillips and Brian (Summer) James of Columbus, MS; brother-in-law, Tim (Stephanie) Mullins of Ashland, MS. He loved his nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
On Wednesday, December 6, visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., with the service to follow at Annunciation Catholic Church, Columbus, MS. Graveside interment will be held immediately following at Friendship Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Shawn Dyson, Adam Earhart, Chris Glenn, Brian James, Allen Kerby, Tim Mullins, Billy Poole, Bobby Poole, and Wallace Richardson.
