Dorothy Hickman

Dorothy “Dot” Hickman passed away on June 7, 2022. She was 97 years old.
She was born March 1, 1925, in Lowndes County to the late Monroe and Ella Mae Vaughan. Valedictorian of Caledonia High School class of 1944, her first job was working at Columbus Air Force Base during WWII. She later worked for Mr. Bernstein at Jean Ann’s and Ruth’s department stores for many years. With a striking resemblance to Hollywood icon Barbara Stanwyck, she modeled on many occasions in local fashion shows for Mr. Bernstein.
Dorothy was a faithful member of Columbus Church of Christ where she met her late husband of sixty-nine years, Robert H. Hickman. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she leaves behind two daughters and their spouses, seven grandchildren and their spouses and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Grace Briscoe.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Murphy (Mike) and Phyllis Chaffin (Les); grandchildren, Sara Gallman (Tony), Ben Murphy (Nicole), Andrew Murphy, Anne Murphy, Katy Aldred (Mark), Emily Wade (Marshall) and Matthew Chaffin (Morgan); great-grandchildren, JW, Katherine and Michael Gallman, Chelsea and Carson Hollingsworth, Hunter and Sydney Murphy, Jaxon Aldred, Jay Wade and Charlotte Chaffin.
The family would like to give special mention to two special friends “her party girls,” Emma Johnson and Ramona Pound.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Graveside services will follow at Lone Oak Cemetery in Steens, MS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Columbus Church of Christ, Mission Fund, 2401 7th St. N. Columbus, MS 39705.
