Doris Virginia Smith

Doris Virginia Smith, age 95, died Monday August 28, 2023, at her residence in Columbus. A funeral service will be held Friday, September 1st, 2023, at 1:30 at Memorial Gunter Peel of Columbus with Pete Bowen officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 until 1:30n p.m. at the funeral home. Interment after at Memorial Gardens, Columbus, MS.

Mrs. Smith was born on December 27, 1927, in Millport, Alabama, to the late Marvin and Blanche Smith. She was a member of Steens Church of Christ. She was a retired employee of Sears, and a member of the Lowndes County Home Extension Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Newmon Allen Smith; her eldest and beloved daughter, Randie Ellen Smith O'Shaughnessy Matthews; and her brothers, Phil Smith, Joe Smith, Dan Smith and Tom Smith.

She is survived by her beloved sister, Sharon Arnold of Valdosta, Georgia, her beloved sisters-in-law, Mary Smith of Birmingham, Alabama, and Dot Smith Ditsworth of Mobile, Alabama, her beloved son, Rodney Allen Smith (Mary Lou) of Paris, Texas; and her two beloved surviving daughters, Cathy Smith Fields (Wesley) of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico, and Donna S. Smith of Columbus, Mississippi. Mrs. Smith had 7 grandchildren, Vickie Smith Slay­ton of Eustis, Florida, Seamus O'Shaughnessy (Katerina) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Shannon Jen­nings (Rodger) of McCool, Mississippi, Jason Smith (Christy) of Waco, Texas, Philippa Jean "PJ" Mat­thews of Scottsdale, Arizona, Chuck Eason (Joan­na) of Omaha, Nebraska and Ericka Juno (John) of Honey Creek, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; as well as a plethora of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grand- and great grandchildren, Vickie Slayton, Jason Smith, Dylan Weigel, Dalton Jennings, Rodger Jennings and son-in-law Wesley Fields.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Seamus O'Shaughnessy, Philippa Jean "PJ" Mat­thews, Haley Weigel, Members of Steens Church of Christ, Dr. Eric McClendon and staff, the nurses of Baptist Hospice, Columbus MS, and her wonderful sitters, chief among them Emma Johnson and Melisa Stewart.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society, 50 Airline Road, Co­lumbus, MS 39702.
