Charles “Charlie” Box, 84, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, family member, and friend, peacefully entered into the presence of his Savior on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Born September 19, 1940 in Morgan City, Mississippi, Charles was the son of the late Joe Sebert Box and Mary Lucille (Snyder) Box. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Glenda Kay (Jobe) Box, with whom he shared over five decades of joy, support, laughter, and Christian marriage. Together, they built a legacy of family and service that stands as a testament to their faith and dedication. A proud son of Mississippi, Charles was a gifted athlete and leader from an early age. At Lee High School in Columbus, he played football, baseball, and ran track, excelling in each. His passion for sports and leadership continued at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, where he played football under the renowned coach Bull Sullivan, an experience that left a lifelong mark on him. At EMCC, he was well-loved, served as student body president, and was later inducted into the athletic hall of fame and honored as Alumnus of the Year. In his heart, Charles always remembered the value of his education and gave back by founding the Box Family Scholarship to help students achieve their dreams. After EMCC, Charles began his education at Mississippi State University. However, he withdrew to bravely serve his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Air Force. His service exemplified his commitment to faith, family, and country, a commitment he would carry into all areas of his life. Upon returning home, Charles pursued his professional life in business, and became a pillar of his community. From owning Box Carpet in downtown Columbus to his work with several local businesses and, ultimately, retiring as the Executive Director of the Phillips YMCA, Charles dedicated his talents and heart to those around him. The YMCA became one of his life’s most fulfilling roles, allowing him to combine his business acumen with his love for Christ and a genuine desire to uplift others. While at the YMCA, Charles finished his education at The W earning a degree in political science. Charles also served his community through various community service, volunteer, and military organizations such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a 49-year (life) member of Kiwanis where he served in many roles including Lt. Governor of the District. After retiring from the YMCA, Charles served as a member of the Columbus City Council, where he believed in giving back through public service. He held a deep belief in Proverbs 11:25, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” His life was a living example of this, marked by tireless generosity, encouragement, and joy. In addition to his professional and public service, Charles was a dedicated coach in Lowndes County and at the YMCA, guiding not only his own sons but many other youth, instilling in them a love for sports and a foundation of values that would guide them throughout life. Charles was an avid storyteller, and his love for life’s stories was infectious, making him a beloved friend to many. Above all, he loved his family and was deeply proud of them. He is survived by his wife, Kay Box, by his sister, Mary Jo King of Waveland, MS; his brother, William Box of Jackson, MS; his sister-in-law Judy Jobe of Pearland, TX; his sons, Chuck Box (Amanda) of Austin, TX and Mark Box (Jenny) of Columbus; and his adored grandchildren: Trey (Courtney), Isabelle Hartselle (Luke), Hazel, Eli (Brielle), and Ethan. He also leaves behind many beloved extended family. He cherished his role as a father and grandfather, and his favorite family names were simply “Dad” and “Daddy Box.” He was looking forward to the new name of “Great Daddy Box” as he was soon to become a great grand-father. Charles’ life was rooted in his faith in Christ. “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23) aptly reflects the way he lived and loved. He was a member of First Christian Church for approximately 60 years serving as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and servant of Christ. He leaves a legacy of faith, integrity, and service—a life truly well-lived. A celebration of Charles life will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at First Christian Church in Columbus. Visitation starts at 11:00 a.m., and the funeral begins at 1:00 p.m. Following the services, a private family graveside service will be held at Friendship Cemetery. Pallbearers will be William Box, Chuck Box, Mark Box, Ethan Box, Trey Box, and Eli Box. Honorary Pallbearers will be the deacons and elders of First Christian Church. Friends and family who would like to honor Charles may either send a flower remembrance to the services or may donate to the Building Fund at First Christian Church. Though Charles’ earthly journey has come to an end, his spirit and stories live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
