William “Charles” Slayton, 69, of Columbus, MS, passed away September 4, 2020, after an incredible, awe inspiring battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully at home with his loving, faithful wife, Nancy Slayton by his side.
Charles was born June 19, 1951 to the late Docia Bea Wilkerson and William “Bill” Clyde Slayton in Moulton, AL. He graduated from S. D. Lee High School in Columbus, Mississippi in 1969. After graduation, he began his career at Ceco Buildings (now NIC) retiring after 38 years of service.
Charles married Nancy Woodard and they had a wonderful 22 years together sharing their love of God, family, travel, gardening, and spending time with one another.
Charles is survived by his wife Nancy, two sons Steven Lee Slayton and Terry Lance Slayton, two brothers John “Buddy” (Sandra) Slayton and Edward Wayne Slayton, one sister-in-law, Marilyn Slayton, and a host of grandchildren, great grand children, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin Lynn Slayton and Wilson “Buster” Rembert Slayton, one sister, Carolyn Marie Slayton Bowling, and one son William Ryan Slayton.
Charles was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church of Columbus, MS. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, helping others, and was always ready for a good laugh.
Charles was a walking miracle. In 2006, he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor that the doctor’s gave a 4% survival rate. With a positive attitude, strong faith in God, and a loving wife by his side, Charles beat the odds. He not only survived but thrived for fourteen more years! Even in the face of a second and third diagnosis of cancer, Charles kept a positive attitude, kept loving his family and kept his faith in God.
A Celebration of Life will be held October 30, 2021 at Fairview Baptist Church Highway 69 S Columbus, MS.
Visitation at 10:00 a.m. Service 11:00 a.m.
The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Brain Tumor Foundation.
