In Loving Memory of Carl James Doumit
January 11, 1945 – April 22, 2025
With profound sorrow, the family announces the passing of their beloved husband,
father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Carl James “Pookie” Doumit, on April 22,
2025 at his home in Columbus, MS. A cherished member of the family, Carl's love,
kindness, and warm presence enriched the lives of those who
knew him in countless ways.
Carl was born on January 11, 1945, in New Iberia, Louisiana, to the late Kalil and Agnes
John Doumit. He was raised by his late Grandmother “Mama John” and
3 aunts in Erath, Louisiana.
He earned a B.S. in chemistry (USL now ULL), an M.S. in inorganic chemistry,
an MAT in education, and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry (all 3 at Tulane University-New
Orleans). He was hired to teach for one year at “The W” (Mississippi University for
Women) in Columbus in 1973. He taught for 30 years.
Some of Carl’s accolades include MUW Emeritus Professorial rank; Recipient of 1976
“W” MehLady yearbook dedication; Recipient of the 1989 Faculty Member of the Year
Award; and the Mississippi Legislature’s HEADWAE award.
Carl lived a life marked by wisdom, outgoing personality, and unwavering devotion to
family and friends. Known for his love of teaching and kind heart, he touched many lives
with his passion for sharing knowledge and building meaningful connections.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Karen Reed Doumit; his son, Kevin; his
daughter-in-law, Terri; his grandchildren, Andrew, Patrick, and Brandon Doumit of
Columbus and Lauren Doumit Snider (Wade) of Millport, AL; and his great-
grandchildren, Elijah and Parker Snider. His family will continue to carry his love in their
hearts, ensuring that his spirit remains alive through cherished memories.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Annunciation Catholic Church,
Annunciation Catholic School, or to St. Vincent DePaul Society, all of Columbus, MS.
Service Details:
A service to honor and celebrate Carl's life will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025 at
Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus (808 College St.) with visitation at 10:00 AM
and Mass at 11:00. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens of Columbus.
