Carl Deddo

May 13, 1930 — September 4, 2024

Columbus

Mr. Carl Deddo of Columbus, Mississippi passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. Carl, the youngest of twelve siblings, was born on May 13,1930, to a big Italian American family and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. In 1954 he was drafted into the United States Army where he served honorably for 11 months. Upon returning home from his service, he spent his career working at Weld Bend Corporation in Chicago. During this time Carl met his wife of sixty-five years, Frieda Marquart. They were married on January 15, 1959.

In 1993, Carl and Frieda moved to Columbus, Mississippi to be closer to their oldest daughter Cynthia and her family and to enjoy the warmer weather. Carl spent time crafting, gardening, taking care of his animals including dogs, cats, ducks, and geese and was always tinkering and in his garage. He had a perpetual garage sale for items he would scavenge from around the Columbus neighborhoods that he would fix, clean up, and sell. Carl always said the key to a long life was to keep one’s mind busy and body active, which he embodied until his final days. He went to the gym every day well into his eighties, did crafts, and remained sharp-witted with an exceptional memory for detail. He dressed up to the nines for every family holiday, including matching jewelry, and enjoyed showing off his sense of style. Most of all Carl enjoyed spending time with his family and engaging with those around him in thoughtful stories while sharing a laugh.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Annie Deddo, eleven brothers and sisters, and his son-in-law SMSgt Randolph Putnam, USAF retired. Carl is survived by his wife Frieda and their three children Mrs. Cynthia Putnam, Mr. Timothy Deddo and his wife Mrs. Joyce Deddo, and Mrs. Jacqueline Beyer and her husband Mr. Hank Beyer. Grandchildren, Dexter Deddo, Amanda (Jessica) Putnam, Nicholas Deddo, Maj Ryan (Aline) Putnam, USAF, Carley Deddo, Jessica Beyer, and Jacob Beyer. Great-grandchildren Marley Deddo, River Deddo, Grace Putnam, and Elizabeth Putnam, and numerous beloved nephews, nieces, extended family, and friends.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the loving team from Gentiva Hospice, who allowed Carl to have his final days at home surrounded by family.

Visitation is planned for 10:00 a.m. Friday, 20 September 2024 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus, Mississippi, with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at 11:00 a.m. Father Jeffrey Waldrep will celebrate the service.
