BUTCH DOLLAR

Ralph Dwain “Butch” Dollar, age 74, of Columbus, MS, passed away April 22, 2021, at his residence.  Memorial services will be Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Chapel 903 College St. location with Reverend B. J. Chain officiating.  The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.

Butch, as he was known to everyone, was born in Morrilton, AR, to the late Captola Ring and Dalton Dollar on August 25, 1946.  He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Vesta Pearl Ring, and grandfather, Ed Ralph Ring.  He graduated from Morrilton High School in 1964 where he was the drum major for the school band.  He was also an Eagle Scout.  He attended the University of Central Arkansas until he joined the marines.  As a marine he was stationed 9 miles from the DMZ at Camp Carol and Quang Tri, Vietnam.  After he returned from the service, he returned to college and graduated with a banking and finance degree.  He also attended the Louisiana School of Banking.  He came to Columbus, MS, to be the manager of the General Electric Credit Corporation.  It is at this time he met his wife, Kathie Quinn.

Butch had been very active in the community for many years.  He was a charter member and on the board of directors of 1 st Book.  He was an Elder for the First Presbyterian Church and Chairman of the Board of Deacons.  He served on the Pushmataha Boy Scouts Council.  He and his three boys, Kirk, Robbie, and Dustin, were members of Troop 63, and two of his sons were Eagle Scouts.  He also served as president of the Exchange Club.  He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, Lake Norris, the Create Foundation and Magnolia Tennis Club, playing singles until he couldn’t any more.  He then traded his racquet for a motorcycle and enjoyed riding for many years over the Southeast and Northeast parts of the United States.  He was a member of the VFW Riders Post 4272 and participated in Governor Phil Bryant’s Ride for the Wounded Warrior from Jackson to Biloxi.  Another ride he was really proud of was riding with other Vietnam veterans to the Washington D.C. Memorial Day Run for the Wall.

Butch enjoyed music and singing.  He played the trombone and later in life learned to play guitar.  He participated in the Pilgrimage pageants, and he was a member of the Columbus Choral Society, the First Presbyterian Church Choir, and the Mississippi State Community Bank.

Butch was an avid hunter, fisherman and collector.  He was always seeking new things to learn.  He was seldom still and was always working on one project or another.  He loved life, despite having a heart attack at the early age of 47.  He never let it slow him down or make him lose his zest for life.  His motto in life seemed to be “waste not, want not” because he didn’t like to throw anything away.

He leaves behind to mourn him his wife Kathie of 46 ½ years, his boys, Kirk Dollar (Leslie) of Birmingham and Robbie Dollar of Columbus, his beloved grandchildren Jackson and Arlin Kate, children of his late son Dustin Dollar, his sister Edwina Lieblong and his brothers, Robert (Becky) Haney, David (Missy) Haney, and Donald Haney.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 9681, Columbus, MS, 39705, or American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX, 75284.
