Dr. Barbara Fay Ely, age 93, of Columbus, MS , passed away June 6, 2020, at her residence. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory 716 2 nd Ave. North location is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Ely was born August 18, 1926, in Greenwood, MS, to the late Lee Wess and Olive Mae Cowsert Ely of Itta Bena, MS. Barbara’s primary love of her life was being a professor of Spanish at Mary Baldwin University of Stanton, VA. She was the director of the Mary Baldwin College Spanish Program in Madrid, Spain, for 7 years. She loved her students dearly and they loved her. She has remained in touch with many of her former students over the years.
Dr. Ely leaves behind many loving friends.
