ALAN SMITH

Samuel Alan Smith, 68, peacefully left this world on Sunday July 26, 2020 at his home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.

Alan’s love of plants and gardens began in high school when he took his first job at a nursery in Hattiesburg.  He began his own business and started a family in Amory in 1977 and expanded both when he moved to Columbus in 1989. He and his wife Susan owned and operated Smith Landscaping and the Greenhouse for more than 30 years. His talent can be seen throughout the area .  Alan’s gardening legacy will continue to be a gift to all those that love him as the season s change .

Alan had a strong and always intelligent faith. He was a dedicated elder of First Presbyterian Church, and led numerous ministries over the years including the Living Waters World Missions and the School Lunch Backpack program.  He was also a lifetime member of the Loft Choir- a tenor, who’s voice will always be remembered.

Family was, by far, the most important thing in his life.

Alan was born in 1951 in Hattiesburg, MS to the late Thomas and Alice Smith.

He is survived by his devoted wife Susan Smith, their six children and eight grandchildren: Freyja Stoltz (David Stoltz, grandchildren Peter and Joseph Stoltz), Amanda Bowen (Nick Pfifer), Abby Rippy (grandson Tyler Rippy and Ana Grace Rutherford ), Rachel Hurt (John David Hurt, granddaughter Caroline Hurt), Clay Bowen (Shannon Bowen, grandchildren Colton and Reagan Merchant and Landon Bowen) and Spencer Smith (Erin Kempker, granddaughter Jessie Smith), his two sisters Cynthia Blacklaw and Tommy Anne Lawrence and his brother Jeffrey Smith-DeBlieu.

His services will be held in the gardens he designed at First Presbyterian Church on Bluecutt on Wednesday, July 29th . Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., and will be followed by a hilltop service at 10:00 a.m.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to First Presbyterian Church at P.O. Box 9681 Columbus, MS 39705.
