Alton Jackson “A. J.” Steverson, Jr., age 86, of Columbus, MS, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Chapel 716 2 ^nd Ave. North location with Jason Heady and Shawn Dickey officiating.  The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until the time of the service.

Mr. Steverson was born October 6, 1934, in Lowndes County, MS, to the late Alton Jackson and Lois Barrow Steverson, Sr.  He served in the United States Army and was a graduate of Mississippi State University and member of the MSU Tip Off Club.  He was a member of the Columbus Church of Christ and officiated high school and junior college football for over 35 years.  Mr. Steverson also served as secretary for MS Junior College and small college officials for 25 years.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Frances G. Steverson.

Survivors include his brother, W. E. “Bill” Steverson and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Robbie Shaw, Frank Goodman, Nash Heady, Wes Steverson, Randy Edmonson, Bill West, Ralph Shaw, and Rodney Faulkner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Bolton, Gary Conquest, Frank Griffin, Kenny Bush, Roy King and his wife Daisy, Charlie Newell, Pete Randle, Tommy Johnson, Jerry Lavender, and Terry Brumley.
