Melba Mims Melba Mims, age 88, died Oct. 26, 2012 at Trinity Healthcare. Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sun., Oct. 28 at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Ridge Road. The service will follow at 3:00 at the church. Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Mims, born Jan. 2, 1924 in Hardeman County, Tenn., was the daughter of Pleasant Andrew & Lavarah Howell Barnes. Her family moved to Carroll County, Miss., where she attended J.Z. George School and where she met and married Fred Meek Mims. The Mims moved to Columbus in 1941 where they reared their two children. After both the son and daughter were out of college, Mrs. Mims became one of Miss. University for Womens early non-traditional students and prepared herself for a 28-year career as a bookkeeper for Drs. Richardson, Stanback, and Dailey. After her retirement as a bookkeeper, she worked for six years as Programming Secretary for WCBI Radio. She re-entered the workforce again to work at Sewing World and then part-time at First Baptist Day Care before launching a sewing and alterations service in her home. Mrs. Mims was skilled in the needlecraft arts and was widely known for her crochet and embroidery talent. Mrs. Mims was a longtime member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Peniel Sunday School Class. She was an ordained elder in her church and active in the Cumberland Presbyterian Womens Ministry. She was also a member of the North Miss. Emmaus Community. Mrs. Mims was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Willard Barnes Lanclos; and son, Howell G. Mims; She is survived by her daughter Annette Mims Benson (Bill); daughter-in-law Martha Jo Mims; three grandsons, Wes Mims (Linda), Brian Benson (Jennifer), and Byron Benson (Melanie); and four great grandchildren, Houston Mims, and Avery, Claire, & Lily Benson. Pallbearers are Wes Mims, Brian Benson, Byron Benson, Joe Mims, Ray Lanclos, and Patrick Lanclos. Memorials may be made to Trinity Healthcare, 230 Airline Road, Columbus, MS 39702, or to a charity of ones choice.
