Dr. Samuel Britton Platt Jr.

August 19, 1908 — February 20, 2007

Dr. Samuel Britton Platt, Jr., 98, went home to be with the Lord on February 19th, 2007 at Trinity Healthcare, Columbus, MS. Services will be held Friday February 23, 2007. A family interment service at Friendship cemetery will precede the 9:30a.m. visitation in the Chapel of First Baptist Church and 11:00 a.m. service Celebrating his life in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church Columbus, MS. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Britt Platt, David Morris, Danny Morris, Wesley Platt, Jim Morris and Dr. Chip Platt. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Dr. Platts Sunday School class and the deacons of First Baptist Church as well as the staff of Collegeview Personal care. He was preceded in death by his faithful and loving wife, Clara Lucas Platt (dec. 9/14/1999); and his sister, Lily Maude Haney, who died at the age of 100. He is survived by three children; Sammy Platt (Joanne) of Columbus, MS, Claire Platt Morris (Dave) of Montgomery, AL, and Dr. Luke Platt of Tupelo, MS; ten grandchildren, twenty five greatgrandchildren; and great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy Mell Platt, age 101 of Shreveport, LA and Marjorie Platt Middleton, age 96 of Chico, CA. Dr. Platt graduated from S.D Lee High in 1925, Mississippi College in 1928, Medical College of Georgia and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. When circumstances prevented Dr. & Mrs. Platt from their ambition of being medical missionaries to China, they spent 5 years doing medical work in Menlo, GA. In 1939 they began their medical practice in Columbus, MS which lasted more than 50 years. Their zeal for missions flowed through their church, their medical practice and the lives of their family, who continue their legacy in worldwide mission efforts. Dr. Platt taught a mens Sunday School class at First Baptist for more than 50 years and served as a life deacon. He was a Rotarian, a member of the Golden Triangle Medical Foundation and a member of Global Outreach. Dr. Platt was the first doctor in this area to use the caudal anesthetic with women in childbirth. Patients came from miles around to take advantage of this. Mrs. Platt served as his nurse and aide, she graciously served at his side at home, in the office and in the church.
