ALTON HONNOLL Alton Allen Honnoll Age 88 died May 25, 2009 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in Columbus, MS Services will be held at Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Minister Joel Ellis Officiating burial will follow at Furnace Hill Cemetery near Vernon, AL at 3:45 p.m. Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Alton Honnoll was born in Columbus, MS on January 8, 1921. He lived most of his life in the Caledonia and Columbus area, with the exception of his military years in London, England and his four years of wanderlust when he moved his young family to California. He attended the first grade at Franklin Academy in Columbus then moved to the rural schools in the Caledonia area. At age 16, during the depression years, he joined the Citizens Conservation Corps (CCC) for two years working in the forestry division as a pole climber with the telephone crew. Upon returning home, he helped work the family farm until drafted into the military. He served in the Army Air Corp, stationed in London, repairing damaged bombers. He always had stories to tell about his experiences there. He was part owner of Shortys Body Shop with his uncle David (Shorty) Williams and gained a reputation as on of the finest auto body repairmen in Columbus. He later owned his own repair business until his retirement. Guitar playing was his hobby from a young age that gave him great enjoyment until his death and he was known as a wonderful, gifted musician. He married Irma Nell Chaffin on September 18, 1943, and they had over 65 years together. Unfortunately, the last 15 years was spent being totally devoted to the care of his wife who suffers from Alzheimers. He set a wonderful example of love and devotion to everyone who knew him. He was a faithful Christian and member of East Columbus Church of Christ having served in the past as Deacon. His Bible knowledge was extraordinary. Survivors include: Wife-Irma Nell Honnoll of Columbus, Miss. Two Daughters- Patricia Wheeler and Marilyn Lavender, all of Columbus. Two sons-in-law Doug Wheeler and Mike Lavender. Grandchildren -Todd Wheeler (Candy), Tupelo, MS -Scott Wheeler (Terri), Aberdeen, MS -Amanda Lavender Westmoreland (Josh), Tupelo, MS -Jason Wheeler Columbus, MS -John Lavender (Kelly), Nolensville, TN 10 Great Granchildren- Thomas Lavender, Blake Wheeler, Dalton Wheeler, Anna Lavender, Sam Alton Westmoreland, Kate Wheeler, Taylor Wheeler, Wyatt Wheeler, Mary Wilemon Westmorland, and Ava Lavender.
