MELBA AVERY Melba Louise Short Avery age 85 died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Trinity Healthcare Center in Columbus. Services will be held Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Avery and Rev. Ron McDougald officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until service time Thursday. Mrs. Avery was born on Tuesday, November 17, 1925 in Tuscaloosa County, AL to the late Virgil Silas and Lily May Dickey Short. She was a graduate of Brookwood High School in Brookwood, AL and a charter member of Canaan Baptist Church, Lehmberg Road Columbus, MS. Melba worked along side her late husband Joe W. Avery at Columbus Curb Market many years before going into the healthcare field. She worked in the Emergency Room at Lowndes General Hospital as their first office clerk. She then transferred to Internal Medicine Associates and retired from there after many years of service. She loved cooking, crocheting, Atlanta Braves Baseball, and studying her Bible. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Laura Kathryn Avery Hester. Survivors include: Two Daughters: Sheila D. Bardwell, Columbus, MS Pat Burwell (Brooke), Steens, MS Two Sons: Danny W. Avery (Faye), Brooksville, MS Phillip J. Avery (Karen), Lakeland, FL One Brother: Tom Ed Short (Frankie), Dothan, AL Eight Grandchildren: Phillip Avery, Jr. Lynda Colbert Ricky Killian Katie Thomas Ginny Sanders Paul Avery Kim Avery Angela West The Pallbearers will be: Phillip Avery, Jr., Ricky Killian, Paul Avery, Will Sanders, Glenn Herron, and Stanley Avery The Honorary Pallbearers will be: Chris Herron, Dr. James Woodard, Dr. John Reed, Dr. A. R. Dill, Staff of Trinity Healthcare, and Great Grandsons. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the donors favorite charity
