Robert Bruce McCarter, known to his many friends as Bill, departed this life on December 1, 2007. Visitation will be held Monday, December 3, at 1:00 p.m. followed by services at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. McCarter was born February 14, 1920, in Lee County, Mississippi, to the late Isaac Allison McCarter and Sarah Williamson McCarter. He was a resident of Columbus since 1940. In 1942 he married Marietta Ward McCarter who survives him. He joined the United States Army in 1941 and served as a staff sergeant and forward observer during World War II with Pattons Third Army. He was a member of the 26th Yankee Division 180th Field Artillery Battalion. A survivor of the Battle of the Bulge, he fought in campaigns throughout Normandy, Northern France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the ETO ribbon with four battle stars, and the Bronze Star. While maintaining lifelong farming interests in Lee County, he served as a United States Postal Service employee for 36 years. Born a Presbyterian, Mr. McCarter joined First Baptist Church in 1945 where he was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class. He was a life member of the Columbus Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Lions Club, a member of the Lake Norris Fishing Club, and a longtime member of the Holiday Inn Breakfast Club. In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Mary Kate McCarter Roberts; son-in-law, William E. Roberts, III; granddaughter, Mary Margaret Roberts; grandson, Porter McCarter Roberts; two sisters, Mrs. Cass Rice and Mrs. Archie Thomason of Tupelo; and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Ike McCarter, John William Rice, Rufus Ward, Dudley Carter, Hal McClanahan, Bobby Patrick, Al VonKohn, and Steve Wallace. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Faris, Kenneth Holditch, Joe McCarter, Larry McCarter, Neil McCarter, Tommy Moody, Judson Ward, Lucian Ward, Richard Barnett, Paul Beale, Clark Bozeman, Bill Brigham, Ira Carter, Paul Cockrell, Dugan Ellis, M.C. Edwards, Charles Ferguson, Billy Furr, George Hazard, Charlie Holcomb, Glenn Lautzenhiser, Mac McCarty, Frank Nolen, Riley Nolen, John Prince, George Smith, Henry Weiss, Charlie Whitney, Charles Younger, Members of the Builders Sunday School Class, and Members of the Holiday Inn Breakfast Club. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
