Dr. George Spencer Barnes, Sr. Age 88 died October 11, 2006 at his Residence in Columbus. Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Sunday, October 15, 2006 at 3:00 PM with Father James Carlyle officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery Visitation will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Sunday, October 15, 2006 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the Earline Robertson Room. Dr. Barnes was born on July 9, 1918 in Natchez MS to the late George McMaster, M.D. and Jane Spencer Barnes. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi in 1938. He attended the 2-year medical school at the University of Mississippi in Oxford and recieved his M.D. degree from Tulane University in 1942. Dr Barnes interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and served as a flight surgeon with the U.S. Army-Air Force from 1943 through 1946. He served as health officer for Washington, County MS for one year and then as a resident in internal medicine at Kennedy Verterans Administration Hospital in Memphis fro 1948 to 1950. Dr. Barnes practiced Internal Medicine in Columbus from 1951 until his retirement in 1993. He was active in many professional and civic organizations including serving as president of the Prairie Medical Society in 1966, the Mississippi Heart Association in 1970-71, the Mississippi Society of Internal Medicine and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce in 1971. Dr Barnes was instumental in the efforts to establish Lowndes General Hospital, now Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi for 1968 until 1986. Dr. Barnes was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Columbus and a member of the Vestry from 1976-1979. survivors include: Wife of 59 years Anne Montgomery Barnes of Columbus, Miss.
