Catherine Taylor, 87, of Columbus, died November 16, 2008, at BMH-GT. Catherine was born March 4, 1921, to Robert B. and Lelia Rye Barton. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2008, from 6-8 at Memorial Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 2:00 at Memorial Funeral Home with burial at Friendship Cemetery with Dr. Sam Morris officiating. In addition to her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by three brothers, James Barton, Robert Beeks Barton, and Wade Barton; sister-in-laws Nell Barton, Celeste Barton, and Patty Taylor. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, R. Penn Taylor, sons Bill Taylor (Becky) of Columbus, and Dr. Bob Taylor (Renee) of Tuscaloosa; granddaughter Stephanie Pate (Robert) of Columbus, grandson Penn Taylor III (Laura) of Ames, Iowa, great grandchildren Ginger and Bryce Pate; sister-in laws Annette Barton of Aberdeen and Mary Lowery of Birmingham, several nieces and a nephew. Catherine was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught elementary Sunday School, was district treasurer of United Methodist Women, and served on the silver polishing committee. She was a life member of the Junior Auxiliary of Columbus and co-chair of the first Pilgrimage Ball. She was active in DAR, Town and Country Garden Club, Magnolia Garden Club, the Columbus Historical Society, a docent of the Lee Home museum and a member of Magowah Gun and Country Club and Marching and Chowder. Catherine worked beside her husband, Penn, while he raised turkeys and cattle, while he served as sheriff, and then for many years at the Lowndes County Tax Assessors office. Catherine and Penn also owned and operated Penns Furniture Shoppe. Pallbearers will be Dr. Eddie Bozeman, Charlie Pilkinton, Sam Pilkinton, Dr. Jack Reed, Tom Whitaker, and Chuck Younger. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 32 Columbus, MS 39703 or to a charity of the donors choice.
