AGATHA BISHOP Agatha Shelton "Gran" Bishop age 93 died Thursday, October 13, 2011 at her residence in Caledonia MS. Services will be held Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Harding and Ben Hardin officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday October 15, 2011 from 6 until 8 at the funeral home. Mrs. Bishop was born on Sunday, June 23, 1918 in Melbourne, AL to the late Parham and Julia Leona Beasley Shelton. She was a longtime member of Kolola Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Bishop and 3 brothers. Mrs. Bishop was a 1939 graduate of New Hope High School. She worked government position in Columbus until 1942 when she met and married her husband who was stationed with the military base in Columbus. They moved to Steens, MS and became the parents of 2 daughters: Glyndia and Dalannis. In 1949, they moved to Kolola Springs. Mrs. Bishop was an avid gardener and sometimes crop farmer until 1960. She then took a temporary position as a Deputy Tax Assessor, which lasted 22 years. In April 1967, Governor Paul Johnson named her Interim Tax Assessor for Lowndes County for the remainder of the year. She resumed her duties as Deputy Tax Assessor until her retirement in 1982. Following her retirement, she enjoyed nurturing her chickens, cats, dogs, flowers and garden. Fondly known as Gran, her greatest delight was her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She shared a special and unique bond with each grandchild. Her great-grandchildren Katie, Bailey and Brayden played active parts in her later years. Katie provided many evenings of after-school entertainment. Brayden had a never-ending concern for her well-being. Bailey shared a deep connection with her Gran as they both shared the same birthday. Gran termed her the best birthday gift ever. Mrs. Bishop lived a long, happy life surrounded by her family and friends. Survivors include: Two Daughters: Glyndia Tyler (Mike), Columbus, MS Dalannis Bolling (Doyle), Caledonia, MS Five Grandchildren: Andy Grant (Candy) Eric Grant (Amanda) Alex Grant (Amy) Erin Grant Julia Driver (Ralph) Five Great Grand Children: Katie Grant Bailey Grant Brayden Grant Dylan Reynolds Madeline Driver . The Pallbearers will be: Andy Grant, Eric Grant, Alex Grant, Melton "Buzz" Miller, Jr., Douglas Holliman, and Billy Welch The Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jack & Myra Schamel, Mike & Shirley Grant, Dale & Susan Reese, Ben & Joan Hardin, Lowndes County DHS Child Support Staff, Joe King, Phillip DiCicco, Chris Griffin, Carl Griffin, Sarah Welch, Bobbie Dawkins, Johnny and Barbara Gibson, Johnny & Ilene Little, Cecil and Wanda Cutrer, Richard and Valerie Riley, Tony Smith, Ike Melton, Attorney Jeff Smith, Dr. Charles Stanback and Jimmy Crenshaw In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: District 2 Volunteer Fire Department 128 Jess Lyons Road Columbus MS 39705 or Donor's favorite charity
