Memorial Funeral Home-Columbus MS OCIE HIGGINS Ocie Higgins Age 101 died September 1, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in, Columbus MS. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ms. Higgins was born in Lebanon Indiana on August 11, 1905 to the late Otis C. and Blanche Manette Dicks Higgins. Ms. Higgins was reared and educated in Lebanon IN where she graduated from Lebanon High School in 1924. She then studied music at the Jordan School of Music at Butler University in Indianapolis where she received a B.A. degree in 1928. In 1953 Ms Higgins received a masters degree in voice from the Indiana University School of Music. Ms Higgins studied in the New York and returned to teach for several years. Ms Higgins taught at Columbia School of Music in Chicago Illinois, Chambersberg, Pennsylvania, and Lebanon, Indiana. She performed in various capacities on the radio in Pennsylvania at the Penn Hall and as the lead singer with the Operacomique of the New York City Opera Company. From the fall of 1947 to retirement in 1976, she taught voice at Mississippi State College for Women now Mississippi University for Women. She was a member of Central Christian Church in Lebanon, Indiana, Psi Iota Xi Sorority in Lebanon Indiana, Kappa Alpha Theta at Butler University, Sigma Alpha Iota National Womens' Honorary Music Society, she enjoyed cooking and needle point.
