Sarah Elizabeth Reed Smith,age 85, of Columbus died Saturday, September 12, 2009 atWindsor Place Nursing Home in Columbus MS. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held Tuesday , September 15, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Mickey Dalrymple and Rev. Sammy Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home Monday, September 14, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Mrs. Smith was born Wednesday, September 19, 1923 in Ackerman, Choctaw County, MS to the late Lester and Kate Sanders Reed. A longtime Columbus resident, Mrs. Smith graduated from S.D. Lee Senior High School. She retired from Hooker Chemical, now Eka Chemicals, Inc., after twenty-one years as the Store Room Supervisor. She was one of the first females in a management role at Hooker. She was a member of Fairveiw Baptist Church and the Fidelus Sunday School Class. She also served as a member of the city Elections Commission for 24 years. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arlo D. Smith. She is survived by her two sons Danny B. Smith (Evie) and Phil R. Smith, both of Columbus, MS, her brother Wayne Reed of Starkville and two grandchildren Floyd Welch Parker, III and Lindsey Moore Parker. Pallbearers will be Tommy Reed, Wayne Reed, Butch Reed, Bob Smith, Taylor Smith, and Kenneth Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Boone, Leon Ellis, Charles Ellis, Craig Barfield, Jimmy Simmons and the Fidelus Sunday School Class.
