Douglas Kent Doug Mackay October 19, 1947 - January 16, 2008 Douglas Kent Doug Mackay died on January 16th, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle. He was born on October 19th, 1947 in Hackensack, New Jersey. Doug lived most of his early years in Carbondale, Pennsylvania graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School. In 1965 he joined the US Navy and served on the destroyer USS Cone during the Vietnam War. Many friends in the navy led him to south Mississippi where he fell in love with the South and Hattiesburg staying to attend the University of Southern Mississippi. He graduated in 1972 with a degree in Radio, Television and Film. Doug worked for WTOK-TV in Meridian, MS then WTVA-TV in Tupelo, MS before moving to Columbus. He was advertising manager for Ruths where he met and married Susan Price in 1978. He went on to work for Archway Cookies and Mississippi Industrial Training Services. In 1987 Doug joined Susan in operating Kwik Kopy Printing and together they opened Party and Paper in 1989. Dougs love for his community led him to run for City Council in 2005. Being elected to this office was one of the highlights of his life. The people he met and friendships he formed were very endearing to him. He took his position very seriously and it brought him great joy and the satisfaction of knowing he was serving and making a difference in the community he cared for so deeply. He served on many boards during his time in Columbus including American Red Cross, Bethany Christian Services, Columbus Chapter of North MS Emmaus, Kids with Character and the Columbus-Lowndes Development Link. He was also a deacon at First Christian Church before joining First Baptist Church where he served on several committees. The family would like to thank the following health care providers who took such personal care of his needs: Dr. Brad Brown, Dr. Bart Williams, Dr. Michael Boland, Dr. Lance Busch, Dr. John McBrayer, Dr. John Ward, Dr. Rusty Ronson, along with their many thoughtful staff members and so many wonderful nurses at BMHGT and Brookwood Medical Center, Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his mother Patricia Orr Mackay of Carbondale, Pennsylvania and his sister Wendy Mackay Toolan of Jermyn, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, Susan Price Mackay and daughter, Amanda. Sister, Bonnie Mackay of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, brothers; Sandy Mackay (Carmel) of Kingston, Pennsylvania and Bruce Mackay of Kansas, Brothers-in-law, Kevin Toolan of Jermyn, Pennsylvania, Wayne Price of Birmingham, Alabama, Ron Smith (Sheila) of Columbus and Kent Smith of Hermosa Beach, CA. Sister- in-law, Becky Smith-Sanders of Biloxi, MS., Mother"in-law Jane Garton Smith (Ron) of Columbus and Father-in-law, EW Price of Birmingham, AL., and best friend, Kenneth Moore of Caledonia, MS. Honorary pallbearers include the Mayor, City Council and employees of the city of Columbus, Columbus Fire and Police Departments, employees of Kwik Kopy Printing and Party and Paper, First Baptist Church Laminack Sunday School class and the many special friends who are too numerous to mention who were always there with their endless support and prayers. Services will be held Saturday, January 19 at First Baptist Church in Columbus at 3:00 with Dr. Shawn Parker, officiating. Visitation begins at 1:00 until service time at First Baptist Church.
