Nellie Jean Beatty

July 26, 1933 — November 9, 2013

Nellie Jean Beatty, 80, died peacefully at her home in Columbus, Mississippi, on November 9, 2013. Nellie Jean, or Jean, as known to friends, was born in Vernon, Alabama in 1933. She was the daughter of Noah Daniel Robertson and Nellie Gray Springfield. Jean married Lindley Beatty, Sr., on December 24, 1951 at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Columbus, where they were long-time faithful members and she loved to sing in the choir. Jean and Lindley had three children, Lindley Stewie Beatty, Jr. (Melissia), Kathryn Ann Goodwin (Gary), and Gary Todd Beatty (Susan), all of whom survive her. In her earlier years, Jean was employed at Mississippi Wholesale and The Russell Company as a bookkeeper. After her children were grown, Jean found time to travel extensively with Lindley, taking long cross-country driving trips across the United States. Shortly after his long career at United Technologies, Lindley preceded Jean in death in 2003. After Lindley died, Jean lived a life on the go and continued her devotion to her family and friends. Jean operated a home business and also volunteered her services for weddings and special occasions for friends, family, and church. Her considerable talent for arranging flowers, decorating, and baking cakes was evident on these occasions. In addition to her children, Jean was survived by all of her grandchildren, Susan Nicole Stafford (Andy), William Scott Beatty, Benjamin Jay Nelson, Natalie Nicole Beatty (Adam), Nathan Todd Beatty, great grandchild Macie Nicole Weathers and step grandchildren, Amanda Bordeaux, Zachary Phipps, Phillip M. Goodwin, Daniel J. Goodwin, and Savannah Lauren Beaugh. She is survived by her brother, Clay Robertson (Joella), of Ethelsville, Alabama. Jean was preceded in death by one brother, Ezra Lee Robertson. Jeans special long-time friends Mae and Sam Honey Hairston were also considered as family. Mae and Honey selflessly dedicated themselves to caring for Jean during her last illness. Prior to that, Mae and Jean always enjoyed traveling and shopping together. Mae was Jeans special confidant and friend and a comforting companion to Jean in her last days. Services will be conducted by Reverend Jearl Hunley at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus, Mississippi on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 3:00 P.M. The family will receive visitors to celebrate Jeans life beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home. After services, Jean will be laid to rest at Memorial Gardens in Columbus, Mississippi. Pallbearers will be Adam Faris, Benjamin Jay Nelson, William Scott Beatty, John Goode, Jerome Stephenson, Nathan Todd Beatty, Ken Lawrence, Daniel Johnson Goodwin and Zachary Phipps. Honorary Pallbearer will be Lowell Hughes, Dr. Raymon Osario, Dr. Kenny Edwards, Peggy Ivy, Annie Louise Richardson, Deloris Gregory, Georgia Davis, Julie Mitchell, other employees of Comfort Keepers of Columbus, and elders of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Columbus.
