Anne Patterson Macgran

November 5, 1923 — January 3, 2008

Anne Patterson MacGran passed away peacefully the morning of January 3, 2008 while visiting her daughter, Mary, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was 84 years old. Anne was born on November 5, 1923 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to William Elmer Patterson and Lula Belle Dean Patterson. She grew up in a loving family with two brothers and a sister. She graduated from Tuscaloosa Public High School at the age of 16. Following high school, she attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, graduating in 1945 with a degree in nursing, and attaining certification as a Registered Nurse. She served as Lieutenant in the US Army in Panama during World War II. On October 1, 1946, she was joined in marriage to Miles MacGran of St. Paul, Minnesota in Columbus, Mississippi. They raised 5 children, and lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Austin, Texas, Salina, Kansas, and Louisville, Kentucky, finally settling in Columbus, Mississippi in 1969. At the age of 60, Anne revived her nursing career, and spent the next 23 years as a Registered Nurse in nursing homes in West Point and Columbus, Mississippi. She retired at the age of 82. She was dedicated to providing comfort and care to all of her patients. Anne lived in the present, and her priority was always helping her family and others. She was known for her unconditional generosity to all and was a lifelong contributor to faith-based charities. She was a strong-willed and determined individual, and could always be relied upon. She was full of life and a joy to be around. An avid sports fan, her favorite teams were the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Elmer Patterson, Jr., and her sister, Lois Patterson Lindsey, and her husband of 59 years. She is survived by her loving brother, Robert A. Patterson of Maryville, Tennessee, and her five children: Kate Bachman (husband Randy) of Denver, Colorado Mary MacGran (husband Fred) of Albuquerque, New Mexico Ellen MacGran of Wilmette, Illinois Maggie Foster of Atlanta, Georgia Pat MacGran (wife Niki) of Austin, Texas She was the proud grandmother of: Gretchen Javaid (husband Nasir) of Cypress, Texas Heidi Tierney (husband Tom) Los Alamos, New Mexico Julie Monge of Las Vegas, Nevada John Monge of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania James Monge (wife Erin) of Austin, Texas Jared Foster of Atlanta, Georgia Her family also includes 8 great grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Anne had many special friends who shared her life and were of great support. These include longtime friends Tom and Doris Cartier of Florence, Texas, Martha and Dale Fulton, Sherry and Jerry Davis, Francis Dill, Joan Sheppard, and Jean and Bill Blake, and many others. Arrangements have been made at Memorial Funeral Home of Columbus, Mississippi. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, January 9th, from 6:00-8:00 PM, and Thursday, January 10th, from 10:00-11:00 A.M. with service to follow. She will be buried next to her husband at Memorial Gardens of Columbus, 176 South Frontage Road, Columbus, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, c/o Father Scott Donahue, 1140 West Jackson Blvd., Chicago, Illinois, 60607-2906. Pallbearers include John Monge, James Monge, Dale Fulton, Demitris Kloussiades, Pat MacGran and Jerry Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Howington, Tom Tierney, Dan Pettit, Tom Cartier, Randy Bachman, and Fred Ender. ________________________________
