Mrs. Mary Alice Barnett Steel, age 76, of Columbus died January 1, 2008 at Homeplace of Columbus. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at Memorial Funeral Home. Her service will be Friday at 2:00pm at Memorial, with Rev. Mickey Dalrymple officiating and Rev. Tommy Gillon assisting. Graveside services will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The daughter of the late Charles Wilson and Sadie Weatherford Barnett, she was born August 24, 1931 in Neshoba County, Ms and graduated from Longino High School in Philadelphia, Ms. She received a bachelor of Science Degree from Blue Mountain College and a Master of Education Degree from East Texas State University. She also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Tx and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Az. After traching in public schools in Texas and Arizona, Mrs. Steel began teaching in the Columbus Municipal School District in 1978 and retired in 1994. She was also an accomplished pianist and vocalist. A former member of East End Baptist Church and teacher of the Winsome Sunday School class, she was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by sisters Pete Talley and Hilda Barnett and brothers Hop Barnett and Rev. Charles A. Barnett. She is survived by her husband George Y. Steel, Columbus, sons, Carey Day Steel (Jill ), Nashville, Tn and Jason Riley Steel (Kim ), Columbus; brother Tommy D. Barnett (Geneva) Dekalb, Tx; and sisters Dean Walker (Lamar) and Kitty Mowdy (Morris) both of Philadelphia, Ms and Dorothy Kirby and Rebecca Barnett, both of Kackson, Ms. She also is survived by three granddaughters Isabella Katherine ,Gabrielle Grace and Haley Allison Steel Pallbearers will be Bob Crigler, Dennis Holliman, Marvin Butler, Don Clardy , Ron Cooke and Charles Patrick.
